How to Calculate Pavers and Base Materials

Paver count = total area in sq ft ÷ area per paver, multiplied by (1 + waste factor). Waste depends heavily on pattern: a simple stack bond wastes 5%; a 45-degree herringbone can waste 15% or more from edge cuts.

Worked Example: 12×16 ft Patio

  • Area: 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft
  • Paver size: 12×12 in = 1 sq ft each
  • Waste (herringbone 90°): 10%
  • Pavers: 192 × 1.10 = 212 pavers
  • Base gravel at 4 in: 192 × 0.333 ÷ 27 = 2.37 yd³ (~3.2 tons)
  • Bedding sand at 1 in: 192 × 0.083 ÷ 27 = 0.59 yd³
  • Perimeter for edge restraint: 2 × (12+16) = 56 lin ft

Frequently asked questions

How many pavers do I need for a 10×10 patio?+

A 10×10 ft patio = 100 sq ft. With standard 12×12 in pavers, you need 100 pavers before waste. Adding 10% waste for cuts and breakage: 110 pavers. With a herringbone or diagonal pattern, use 15% waste.

How deep should the base gravel be under pavers?+

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) recommends 4 inches of compacted gravel base for foot traffic and 6 inches for vehicular traffic. This is a minimum — thicker bases are better in freeze-thaw climates.

How much polymeric sand do I need for a patio?+

Polymeric sand coverage depends on paver size and joint width. A 50 lb bag typically covers 40–80 sq ft for standard 12×12 pavers at 3/16 in joints. Always check the manufacturer's coverage chart for your specific paver and joint size.

What is bedding sand and how much do I need?+

Bedding sand (coarse, concrete-grade sand) is the 1-inch layer directly under pavers, on top of the compacted gravel base. One cubic yard covers about 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep. Use clean, angular concrete sand — not play sand, which is too fine.

Do I need edge restraints for a paver patio?+

Yes. Without rigid edge restraints, pavers at the perimeter will shift and the patio will spread over time. Plastic paver edging is common and inexpensive. You need one piece per linear foot of perimeter — the calculator returns the perimeter for you.
