About YardMath
What YardMath does
YardMath is a free calculator site for US homeowners, landscapers, and DIYers who need accurate material estimates for outdoor projects. Every tool gives you cubic yards, tons, bag counts, and optional cost estimates in seconds — without sign-ups, paywalls, or forced unit conversions.
The site covers 12 estimators: gravel and stone, mulch and topsoil, raised bed soil, concrete (slabs, footings, post holes), pavers, retaining walls, wood fencing, decks, grass seed, sod, and fertilizer. Articles from university extension services, manufacturer spec sheets, and industry guidelines support each calculator.
Who writes for YardMath
Content is produced by the YardMath Estimating Desk — a small editorial team that researches landscaping and construction materials using primary sources: manufacturer product data (Quikrete, Sakrete, ICPI), university cooperative extension services (Penn State, Purdue, University of Minnesota, Clemson, UF/IFAS, NC State), and published industry standards (IRC, ACI, AWPA, AWC).
We do not publish advice from unnamed personal experience or invented statistics. When we cite a seeding rate or a concrete bag yield, the source is identified and linked. For a full accounting of our constants, formulas, and rounding rules, see the Methodology & Sources page.
AI assistance disclosure
YardMath content is researched and drafted with AI assistance and edited by the team. Factual claims are verified against primary sources before publication. The AI does not invent statistics, personal anecdotes, or fake credentials. Our Editorial Policy describes our sourcing and correction process in detail.
Independence from advertisers
YardMath earns from display advertising (currently through Journey by Mediavine as the site grows toward Mediavine or Raptive). Advertisers do not influence calculator results, constants, or article content. No supplier, brand, or product pays for favorable mention. Our editorial decisions are made independently.
Limitations
All calculator outputs are estimates. Material densities vary by moisture content, source quarry, and gradation. Bag yields are based on published manufacturer specifications but can vary slightly in practice. Always confirm final quantities with your supplier before ordering, and add extra material for large or complex projects.
Structural calculations (retaining walls over 4 feet, concrete footings for loads, deck ledger attachments) should be reviewed by a licensed contractor or engineer in your jurisdiction. YardMath calculators are planning tools, not engineering documents.
