How to Calculate Retaining Wall Materials

Block count = wall face area (length × height) ÷ block face area, plus waste for cuts. The face area of a standard 12×4 in block is 0.333 sq ft.

Height Limits and Permits

Most jurisdictions allow unreinforced walls up to 3–4 feet without a permit. Above that, the IRC and most local codes require:

  • A building permit
  • Engineered plans stamped by a licensed professional
  • Inspections during construction

A wall over 4 feet that fails can cause serious property damage and injury. Always verify height limits with your local building department. Source: 2021 IRC Section R404.

Drainage is critical. Hydrostatic pressure from water building up behind a wall is the leading cause of wall failure. Always install at minimum 12 inches of #57 gravel drainage stone behind the blocks and include a perforated drainage pipe at the base if the wall is more than 2 feet tall.

Frequently asked questions

How many retaining wall blocks do I need per square foot?+

It depends on block size. An 8×4×12 in block covers 0.67 sq ft of face area. Divide your total wall face area (length × height) by the block face area, then add 5–10% for waste and cuts.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?+

Most jurisdictions require a permit for retaining walls taller than 3–4 feet (varies by location). Walls over 4 feet typically require an engineered design under the IRC and local codes. Always check with your local building department before starting.

How deep should the base of a retaining wall be?+

Bury the first course of blocks at least 1 inch per 1 foot of wall height, with a minimum of 4–6 inches. In cold climates, the base should be below the frost line. A gravel base layer of 4–6 inches minimum is required for drainage and stability.

What is drainage stone for a retaining wall?+

Drainage stone (typically #57 crushed stone) is packed behind the wall to allow water to drain rather than build up hydrostatic pressure. Without proper drainage, water pressure can push over a wall. Use at least 12 inches of drainage stone behind the blocks.

How much does a retaining wall settle?+

Properly built walls on a compacted gravel base settle very little — less than 1 inch. Wall failure usually comes from poor drainage behind the wall, an inadequate base, or building beyond the appropriate unreinforced height limit of 3–4 feet.
