How to Calculate Deck Board Quantities

The key math: boards run parallel to one dimension (usually the length). The number of rows = deck width in inches ÷ (board width + gap). Then each row requires enough board lengths to span the deck length.

rows = (deck width × 12) ÷ (board width + gap)
boards per row = ceil(deck length ÷ board length)
total boards = rows × boards per row × (1 + waste)

Deck permits: Most jurisdictions require a building permit for decks above 30 inches off grade or attached to the house. Unpermitted decks can be a liability issue during home sale. Check with your local building department before building.

Frequently asked questions

How many deck boards do I need for a 12×16 ft deck?+

A 12×16 ft deck = 192 sq ft. With standard 5/4×6 deck boards (actual 5.5 in wide) at 3/16 in spacing, the coverage per board per linear foot is 5.6875 in = 0.474 ft. Boards needed across: 12 ft ÷ 0.474 = 25.3, so 26 rows. At 16 ft lengths, that is 26 boards total. Add 10% waste: 29 boards.

What joist spacing is standard for decks?+

The most common spacing is 16 inches on center for standard deck boards. Use 12 inches on center for softer species (like pine), diagonal installations, or composite boards over 12 feet. Some composite boards specify 16 inches max in their warranty.

How many screws do I need for a deck?+

Plan on 2 screws per board end and 2 per joist crossing. For a 12×16 ft deck at 16 in joist spacing with 1.5 in boards, you need roughly 1,500–2,000 screws or hidden fasteners. Buy in bulk (5 lb boxes of coated deck screws) for economy.

What is the maximum joist span for deck framing?+

For #2 southern yellow pine 2×8 joists at 16 in on center, the maximum span is roughly 12–13 feet per the American Wood Council span tables. Always use the actual IRC or AWC span tables for your species, size, and load requirements.

Should deck boards run lengthwise or across?+

Deck boards typically run perpendicular to the joists (so the joists run the width of the deck and boards run the length). Running boards at 45 degrees requires 15% more material and shorter joist spacing (12 in instead of 16 in). Running lengthwise is standard and uses the least material.
