Editorial Policy
Our editorial standards
YardMath publishes material quantity calculators and supporting articles for US homeowners and DIYers. Every number in our calculators and articles comes from a verifiable primary source: manufacturer spec sheets, university extension service publications, published industry standards (IRC, ICPI, AWC), or USGS data. We do not publish fabricated statistics, invented personal anecdotes, fake testimonials, or made-up credentials.
Sourcing requirements
Every factual claim that is not common knowledge must be traceable to a primary source. For calculator constants (material densities, bag yields, seeding rates), sources are documented on our Methodology & Sources page with direct links. For article claims (e.g., frost depth guidelines, concrete slab thickness requirements, paver base depth), we link to the underlying code or extension publication in-text.
We prefer primary sources over secondary ones. Where primary sources conflict, we note the range and explain which value we use as a default and why.
AI assistance disclosure
YardMath content is researched and drafted with AI assistance and edited by the YardMath Estimating Desk team. This means:
- AI tools are used for research aggregation, initial drafting, and formatting.
- All factual claims and calculator constants are verified against primary sources before publication.
- The AI does not invent statistics, manufacture studies, or claim personal expertise it does not have.
- Human editorial review checks sourcing, accuracy, and tone before publication.
We believe in being transparent about this process. If you find a claim that appears to be fabricated or unsourced, please contact us so we can investigate and correct it.
Calculator accuracy
Calculators are tested against hand-calculated examples during development. Our formulas are documented in src/lib/calc.ts with source comments. We verify bag yield figures against product labels (Quikrete, Sakrete), density figures against supplier data and USGS publications, and seeding rates against current university extension recommendations.
Estimates are planning tools. Final quantities should always be confirmed with your material supplier, who can account for local moisture conditions, delivery variations, and project-specific factors we cannot know.
Corrections
We correct factual errors promptly when they are brought to our attention. To request a correction, email hello@yardmath.com with the URL, the specific claim, and a primary source reference if available. We will investigate and update the page if the correction is warranted. Significant factual corrections are noted on the updated page.
Independence from advertisers
YardMath earns revenue from display advertising through Journey by Mediavine (and, as traffic grows, through Mediavine or Raptive). Our editorial decisions — which calculators to build, which constants to use, which sources to cite — are made independently of advertisers. No advertiser, manufacturer, or retailer pays for favorable calculator results, article placement, or product mentions.
We link to manufacturer spec sheets (Quikrete, etc.) for reference accuracy, not as endorsements or paid placements. If a product recommendation appears in an article, it is based on research and sourcing, not commercial relationship.
Privacy
We collect standard web analytics (page views, referrers) through Google Analytics. Calculator inputs are processed locally in your browser and are not transmitted to our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
