How to Calculate Sod for Your Lawn

Measure your lawn area in square feet, add a 5–10% waste factor for cuts and edges, then divide by the sq ft per roll to get rolls needed. Divide total sq ft by pallet coverage to get pallet count.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet of sod do I need?+

Measure each lawn section and add them up. Add a 5–10% waste factor for cuts, corners, and irregular edges. Most sod is sold by the roll (9 sq ft per 2×4.5 ft roll) or by the pallet, which covers 450–500 sq ft depending on supplier.

How much does a pallet of sod cover?+

A standard pallet covers 450–500 square feet. Coverage varies by sod farm and roll size, so always confirm with your supplier. The calculator lets you set the pallet coverage for your specific source.

How many rolls of sod in a pallet?+

Most pallets contain 50–56 rolls at 9 sq ft each (450–504 sq ft total). Some farms use larger 2×5 ft rolls (10 sq ft each), yielding 500 sq ft per pallet. Confirm with your supplier.

When is the best time to lay sod?+

Early fall is ideal for cool-season grasses (bluegrass, fescue): the soil is warm, the air is cooling, and rains are more frequent. Spring works but sod may struggle in summer heat before roots establish. Warm-season sod (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine) installs best in late spring to summer.

How much does sod cost per pallet?+

Sod costs vary by species and region: Kentucky bluegrass runs $200–$350 per pallet ($0.40–$0.70/sq ft); tall fescue $180–$280; bermudagrass $150–$250; St. Augustine $200–$350; zoysia $280–$400 per pallet. Delivery, soil prep, and installation labor add additional cost.
